Stay Safe This Summer
The safety of our members and employees is a top priority at Salem Electric. Warm summer weather often means people are spending more time outdoors. Whether you’re working on yard-improvement projects or setting up for a garage sale, help keep your family, neighbors, and local utility workers safe this summer by following these tips.
Know what’s below. Call before you dig!
Whether you’re planting a tree or shrub, building a deck, or installing a fence, before you pick up a shovel, pick up the phone and call 811. Underground utility lines provide all the conveniences of a modern home including water, sewer, and electricity, however digging on or near underground lines can be dangerous. Never assume a digging project is too shallow and won’t hit a utility line. Call 811 two business days before you begin your digging project to have your underground lines located. It’s free and it’s the law.
Keep utility poles free from signs.
Posting signs or flyers on utility poles is unsafe and in some cases, illegal. Lineworkers climb poles all hours of the day and night, in the best and worst of weather conditions. Injuries occur when climbing gear attaches to a nail, tack, or staple. Please help us keep our lineworkers safe and use a yard stake instead.
