October is National Cooperative Month!
Did you know that Salem Electric is one of more than 900 electric cooperatives serving 42 million members across 48 states? That’s a lot of ground, and that’s just electric co-ops! Add in credit unions, housing, food, health, and agricultural co-ops (to name a few), and there are more than 40,000 cooperative businesses nationwide!
While many electricity customers pay their power bills to companies that answer to far-away stockholders who receive healthy profits each quarter, your board (fellow co-op members) make decisions locally. Co-ops aren’t in the business of generating big dividends for investors. Instead, co-ops try to keep rates low while providing high-quality service, investing money in excess of operating costs back into the cooperative locally, and returning excess (margins) to members in the form of capital credits.
As locally owned and operated businesses, electric co-ops have a real understanding of the members they serve. We act like neighbors because we are neighbors. Thank you for allowing us to serve you.
Co-ops Care: Salem Electric's Energy Analyst and Member Services Representatives are proud to be part of a co-op and look forward to helping our members.
