August 17 is National Nonprofit Day! Each year Salem Electric contributes to over 75 organizations through donations and scholarships. As members of this community, SE employees volunteer hundreds of hours annually to local nonprofit organizations. For the past few years, SE employees have chosen a nonprofit in the local community to “adopt” and support throughout the year with fundraising and volunteer events. Previous years included Family Building Blocks, Union Gospel Mission of Salem, and the Oregon Paralyzed Veterans of America.

In January, SE employees selected Liberty House as the adopted nonprofit for 2020. Liberty House is a child abuse assessment center serving Marion and Polk counties. They offer a safe, comfortable, child-friendly environment for children and their families facing concerns of abuse, neglect, trauma, or grief.

With the unexpected COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, employee fundraising looks a lot different these days. With employees working from home, social distancing requirements in place, and social gatherings limited, volunteer opportunities are no longer an option so employees are finding other ways to support an organization drastically affected by the pandemic. So far this year, employees have raised approximately $2,700 in donations through payroll deductions and various fundraisers. The year may be halfway over, but employees show no signs of slowing down. In times like these, people can come together while staying apart and continue to make a difference in the community.
